Visiting Wales - Raglan Castle
It was the end of a long journey by the time we arrived at Raglan Castle, so while Moana and Alma rested Owen and Jacob went exploring. This castle was one of the last castles built in Wales and much younger than most. Built in the 15th century (around 1445) it was only in operation for just over 200 years before being purposefully ruined in 1646 during the civil war.
Its design was inspired by French castles and building at the time and you can see from the stonework that skill in building castles had progressed. Another interesting design of this castle was that it had cannon holes built into the walls so that cannons and rifles could be used inside the castle on the attacking force. Its walls were also much thicker than earlier castles, so much so that when they pulled down the defense tower they could only manage to pull down two walls before giving up.
